WELCOME
A warm welcome is extended to new families whose children have started at Fendalton School this term and have joined the ESOL programme. The new children are Natsuko, Yusuke and Noa.

ENGLISH

Literacy lessons this term will focus on retelling fables and traditional tales. The children will be using different ways to present fables, orally and in written format. Watch our Wiki http://fendaltonesol.wetpaint.com to see updates on their progress. We are also considering a trip for the senior students to a local rest home, so that the children can share their learning with a new audience.

MATHS
Geometry will be the focus for the beginning of the term. The children will be learning the language of position and mapping skills. As part of learning about Measurement the children will be baking in preparation for our trip later in the term.

PARENT TALK TIME
Dates and topics for this term’s Parent Talk Times are as follows:
Tuesday 19 May - Meet Amy our new translator and support person. Also Interpreting and understanding your child’s Learning Report
Tuesday 16 June- Using our ESOL Wiki - a practical teaching session to help you become more involved in your child’s learning!
All meetings are held in the ESOL room at 9am. Preschool children are welcome. Amy Im Sook Cho will be available to translate into Korean and Japanese for those who require this.

TISSUES PLEASE
With the onset of winter, many children will have colds and runny noses. If you could help us, by donating a box of tissues for use in our ESOL classrooms, we would be very appreciative!

Please remember that we value contact with parents and caregivers. If you have any questions, concerns (or compliments!) about our ESOL programme please feel free to contact us.

Kind regards,

Judith Anthony and Glenys Williams

March 2009

WELCOME
A warm welcome is extended to new families whose children have started at Fendalton School this year and have joined the ESOL programme. The new children are Soo hong, Chris, Raphael, Laiba, Shion, David, Dongku, and Jason.

TESTING
At the beginning of the year the ESOL teachers tested the new students’ understandings in both Literacy and Numeracy to help us identify their learning needs and to form teaching groups. ESOL group and individual lessons started in Week 4.

ENGLISH
Literacy lessons this term will focus on writing recounts. The children have begun planting the garden areas around our beautiful new rooms. We plan to develop the area behind the Village as a cultural garden, representing the different cultural backgrounds of the ESOL children. If you can help with any donations of plants or materials please speak to either Judith or June.

MATHS
Numeracy lessons this term will look at Number. Senior and Middle Students will focus on place value, while Junior children will be working on recognising numbers up to 20. The children will be learning maths language and strategies through games and activities.

PARENT TALK TIME
A big thank you to those parents who attended the first Parent Talk Times on Tuesday! Parent Talk Time is held every second Tuesday and is an opportunity for parents of International Students, and children attending the ESOL programme, to have coffee and a chat about topics of interest relating to Fendalton School and the New Zealand education system. Preschool children are welcome to come. June Chey is available to translate into Korean for those who would like this. Our topics for the term are:
Tuesday 10 March - How can I improve my child’s writing and spelling, upcoming school events
Tuesday 24 March - How can I improve my child’s maths, upcoming school events

We are looking forward to another great year at ESOL!
