Mathematics Learning
Learning, understanding and using Mathematics vocabulary is the other teaching focus of our ESOL programme. In New Zealand it is important that children are able to use and talk about a variety of methods to solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, proportions and ratios. This is based on a strong knowledge of numbers, number patterns and the language to describe these. Again, the students work in small groups to complete practical and written activities, games and discussions based on Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, and Statistics.
Term Two
For the first half of this term the students will be learning the language of Geometry - position and orientation. The Yellow, Red and Purple groups will be learning to use prepositions accurately for example above, around, in, on, under, behind and in front. The Green and Blue groups will be learning the language of mapping for example clockwise, anti-clockwise, left, right, North, South, West and East.
These junior students are placing pictures on a scene by following instructions which include prepositions.
After following oral instructions to reach their destination, these senior students are hunting for buried pirate treasure.
Later in the term we will be looking at Measurement - capacity and weight. The students will be applying their knowledge and vocabulary by baking for the senior students visit to a rest home.

Numeracy lessons this term will look at Number. Senior and Middle Students will focus on place value, while Junior children will be working on recognising numbers up to 20. The children will be learning maths language and strategies through games and activities.
These Junior children are working on recognising numbers to 5.
